The McDonald History of Homemade Cuisine

Earl and Dorothy McDonald founded McDonalds Family Restaurant in 1956 in the small, rural community of Fairbury, IL. By 1963, the café needed a new, larger place to call home. People drove from miles around to taste Earl’s homemade cooking and Dorothy’s delicious pies.

In 1971, Ron and Sue McDonald took over operation of the small town eatery. Traditions continued with people coming from miles to now taste Ron’s deliciously prepared homemade meals and Dorothy’s pies, while Sue managed to greet every customer with a friendly smile and a kind word. McDonalds Family Restaurant has truly been a staple in our community.

In 1981, Ron and Sue’s eldest son graduated from Culinary Arts School and took over as the family baker. News of this new baker, and his pies in particular, spread quickly and Scott developed clientele from as far away as Chicago. A perfectionist in the kitchen, you couldn’t find a more beautiful or tasty pie than one of Scott’s meringue pies!

Meanwhile, Sue continued in her role as host and server. The delicious meals, friendly service, tasty desserts, and honest prices kept people coming back again and again. By 1987 each of Ron and Sue’s five children had an opportunity to work in the family restaurant. They each had their own special niche in the business. Eventually, the business expanded to include catering and delivery services and a banquet facility.

In July 2014, a terrible fire nearly destroyed the restaurant. Undeterred, the McDonalds rebuilt and reopened in December 2014. The dining areas were completely remodeled and updated, but still offer the same cozy feel as the original structure.

We still feature the same full menu, banquet facility, delivery, and catering services, and we now offer an assortment of wine and beer for you to enjoy with your meal. Friendly prices make it easy for you to bring your entire family, or treat your significant other to a large city night out, without having to leave the area! 

We have a brand new kitchen with all of the latest cooking gadgets, and the menu is still designed and prepared by the McDonald clan. We truly are a FAMILY business: Kelly manages the kitchen and servers and prepares some of our favorite dishes, Kim bakes, Ron still prepares meals, Sue manages the office, and Jay hand picks our craft beers and aged steaks.
